Paul J. Scheel, Jr., M.D. is the associate vice chancellor for clinical affairs and professor of medicine at Washington University School of Medicine. He also serves as the chief executive officer of Washington University Physicians, the school’s faculty practice plan, which ranks as the fourth-largest academic group practice in the United States and encompasses 2,500 full-time faculty physicians across 76 medical and surgical subspecialties.

Prior to coming to St Louis, Dr. Scheel was The Ron Peterson Professor of Medicine and the Director of the Division of Nephrology at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and served as the Vice President for Transformation in The Office of Johns Hopkins Physicians.

Dr. Scheel graduated Dr. from Lynchburg College in 1984. After earning his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. in 1987, Dr. Scheel completed an internship and residency in internal medicine on the Osler Medical Service at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Subsequently, he completed a fellowship in nephrology at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and earned a master of business administration degree at The Johns Hopkins University School of Professional Studies and Education. After completing his fellowship,Dr. Scheel joined The Johns Hopkins faculty in 1992.

Dr. Scheel’s clinical expertise is in the area of retroperitoneal diseases. He is responsible for developing medical therapy for patients with Retroperitoneal Fibrosis that is used throughout the world.

Dr. Scheel is board-certified in nephrology. Additionally, he is a fellow of The American Society of Nephrology and is certified by the American Society of Hypertension.

Dr. Scheel is the recipient of The Theodore Woodward Award and is an honorary professor of medicine at Fudan University in Shanghai, China.
