TOLEDO, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 12, 2006--Health Care REIT, Inc. (NYSE:HCN) announced today that it completed $123.1 million of gross investments during the first quarter of 2006. During the quarter, the company had asset sales and loan payoffs of $36.6 million. Net new investments for the quarter totaled $86.5 million.

Acquisitions for the quarter totaled $80.4 million, comprised of eight skilled nursing facilities with 860 beds for $71.0 million, two assisted living facilities with 35 units for $6.1 million and land for $3.3 million. Development advances for the quarter totaled $32.2 million, comprised of $24.3 million for 15 assisted living facilities with 1,043 units, $4.9 million for two skilled nursing facilities with 163 beds and $3.0 million for one independent living facility with 178 units. Approximately $28.0 million of the development advances related to ten projects that began construction during the quarter with the remaining $4.2 million related to eight pre-existing projects. The balance of the first quarter gross investment amount consisted of loan advances totaling $7.7 million and capital improvements for existing facilities totaling $2.7 million.

The company also confirmed that it will release its 2006 first quarter earnings results after the market closes on May 4, 2006.
